03 — Guide

How to record your screen for free step by step

  1. Choose the tool by video length and setup

For a clip under 2 minutes, use Win+Shift+R or Cmd+Shift+5. For a tutorial with webcam and microphone, or anything over 10 minutes, use OBS Studio. If teammates will watch through a link, Loom is fastest, but its free videos max out at 5 minutes.

  2. Configure OBS once

Run Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and choose 'Optimize for recording'. Under Settings → Output → Recording, set the format to MKV (crash-safe; remux to MP4 later) and the encoder to hardware (NVENC, AMF, Quick Sync or Apple VT). Set the frame rate to 30 fps for tutorials and 60 fps for games.

  3. Set up the scene and audio

Add a Display Capture or Window Capture source, a Video Capture Device for the webcam and your microphone. Under the microphone's Filters, add Noise Suppression (RNNoise) and a Limiter at −1 dB. Speak at a normal volume and aim for peaks around −12 dB on the meter.

  4. Record and remux

Hide notifications (Focus Assist or Do Not Disturb), close tabs with private data and record. In OBS, use File → Remux Recordings to convert MKV to MP4 without re-encoding. At 1080p30, OBS's default quality produces about 1–2 GB per hour.

  5. Trim and share

Trim the start and end in the Windows Photos app, Clipchamp or QuickTime (Cmd+T), which are all free. Upload to YouTube as unlisted, or share a Google Drive link, rather than emailing large files.

04 — FAQ

Common questions

Is a free screen recorder really free, with no watermark or hidden costs?

OBS Studio, ShareX, Windows Snipping Tool and the macOS recorder are completely free, with no watermark and no time limit. Loom's free plan limits each video to 5 minutes and 25 videos per person. Many 'free' recorders found through search ads add a watermark or limit recordings to 5–10 minutes until you pay, so prefer open-source or built-in tools.

How do I record internal (system) audio on a Mac for free?

macOS doesn't record system audio natively in the screenshot tool. Install BlackHole (free, open source) and create a Multi-Output Device in Audio MIDI Setup so you can still hear the audio. Alternatively, OBS Studio on macOS 13 or later can capture app audio directly with the macOS Screen Capture source.

Which free screen recorder is best for low-end PCs?

Use the built-in tools (Snipping Tool, macOS Cmd+Shift+5), or OBS with a hardware encoder at 720p30. Software encoding (x264) uses a lot of CPU. Hardware encoders on GPUs from about 2016 onward record with very little performance impact.

Can I record my screen in the browser without installing anything?

Yes. Clipchamp's screen recorder and Loom's Chrome extension record from the browser, and Clipchamp exports 1080p with no watermark. Browser recorders depend on the screen-sharing permission, and system audio usually works only when sharing a browser tab.

What are the best alternatives if I need advanced features?

Camtasia (about 180 USD/year) combines recording and editing with zoom-and-pan effects and quizzes. Screen Studio (Mac, about 89 USD one-time or a subscription) adds automatic zoom and smooth cursor animation for product demos. Loom Business adds unlimited length, editing and analytics for teams.
