01 — Ranking
The 5 best options, ranked
Canva
canva.com
4.6Logo templates plus AI generation, with free PNG and PDF downloads.
- Best for
- Small businesses that also need matching social posts, business cards and slides.
- Free plan & limits
- Thousands of free logo templates and high-resolution PNG, JPG and PDF exports. Transparent-background PNG, SVG export, the Brand Kit and many premium elements require Pro. AI image generation has a limited number of free uses. Templates are shared with other users, so you can't trademark an unmodified template.
Adobe Express
adobe.com
4.5Adobe's logo maker with Firefly AI and commercially safe training data.
- Best for
- Logos you plan to use commercially, built on Adobe Stock-trained AI.
- Free plan & limits
- Free logo templates and PNG or JPG downloads. You get a small monthly allowance of Firefly generative credits. Transparent PNG and some premium assets require Premium. Firefly outputs are cleared for commercial use, except in beta features.
Microsoft Designer
designer.microsoft.com
4.2Free AI image and logo generation with a Microsoft account.
- Best for
- Quick icon-style logo concepts and mood boards at no cost.
- Free plan & limits
- Free with a Microsoft account, with a daily allowance of boosts for fast generation (slower after that). Downloads are raster PNG only, with no vector export. Generated text is often misspelled, so add your brand name in an editor afterward.
Looka
looka.com
4.3AI generator for full brand kits that produces dozens of concepts from your preferences.
- Best for
- Founders who want a polished concept fast and will pay once for the files.
- Free plan & limits
- Generating and editing concepts is free and unlimited. Downloads are paid: a low-resolution PNG costs about 20 USD, and the full package with SVG, EPS and color variations costs about 65 USD. The Brand Kit subscription (social templates, business cards) is extra.
Brandmark
brandmark.io
4.1AI logo designer from the team behind Namelix, with a minimalist style.
- Best for
- Tech and startup brands that want clean, geometric marks.
- Free plan & limits
- Generating and previewing are free. Downloads require a one-time purchase, starting at about 25 USD for PNG files, with vector files and brand guidelines in higher tiers.

03 — Guide
How to make a free AI logo step by step
Write a one-line brief
Include your brand name, industry, 2–3 adjectives (for example 'calm, technical, trustworthy'), the logo type (wordmark, icon or combination) and 1–2 colors. A concrete brief cuts down the number of generation rounds a lot.
Generate in two tools and shortlist 3 concepts
Use Microsoft Designer or Adobe Express for icon ideas and Canva for layout and type. Judge each concept as a 32×32 px favicon and in a single color. If it can't be recognized at that size, drop it.
Rebuild the final logo cleanly
AI output is a raster image, often with flawed text. Set the name in a free typeface (Google Fonts, under the OFL license) and trace or redraw the icon as a vector in Inkscape (free), using Path → Trace Bitmap, or in Figma's free plan.
Check for conflicts before you use it
Run a reverse image search with Google Lens and search the trademark databases (USPTO, EUIPO) for similar marks in your class. AI generators can produce designs close to existing logos.
Export the full file set
Export SVG (master file), PNG with a transparent background at 512, 1024 and 2048 px, a 32×32 favicon.ico, and versions for dark backgrounds and in a single color. Keep the editable source file in your own storage, not only in the tool.
04 — FAQ
Common questions
Is a free AI logo maker really free, with no hidden costs?
Generating is free everywhere, but downloading varies. Canva, Adobe Express and Microsoft Designer let you download PNG files for free. Looka (about 20–65 USD) and Brandmark (from about 25 USD) charge at download. Across the free tools, transparent backgrounds and SVG files are the usual paywall.
Can I trademark a logo made with AI?
Trademark and copyright are different. A logo can be registered as a trademark if it is distinctive and used in commerce. Copyright is harder: the US Copyright Office does not protect purely AI-generated images without meaningful human authorship. Redrawing and modifying the AI concept yourself makes both stronger. For important brands, ask an IP lawyer.
Can I use a Canva template logo for my business?
You can use it, but Canva's license doesn't let you register an unmodified template as a trademark, because other users can use the same template. Change it substantially (custom icon, custom type and layout) before you file a trademark.
Which file formats do I need for a logo?
You need SVG for the web and for scaling to any size, transparent PNG (at least 1024 px) for documents and social media, PDF or EPS for print shops, and favicon.ico or a 32×32 PNG for browser tabs. Without an SVG, every resize loses quality.
What are the best alternatives if I need advanced features?
For full control at no cost, design in Figma (free plan) or Inkscape (open source) using AI concepts as reference. For a professional identity, freelance designers on Dribbble or Contra typically charge 300–2,000 USD. Looka's Brand Kit subscription bundles the logo with templates for business cards and social media.
