How to remove an image background for free step by step
Start with a high-contrast source
Use the original file at the largest size available, not a screenshot. Removers work best when the subject's edges stand out from the background. Shoot products on a plain background 1–2 m behind the subject to avoid contact shadows.
Remove the background with an on-device tool first
On Windows, open the image in Paint and click Remove background. On a Mac, open it in Preview and choose Tools → Remove Background. This is free, private and full resolution. If the edges look rough, run the same image through Adobe Express and compare.
Fix the edges
Zoom to 200% and check hair, glass and gaps between fingers or handles. Clean up with the erase and restore brushes in Adobe Express, or with a layer mask in Photopea (free in the browser) or GIMP.
Export in the right format
Export PNG-24 or WebP with an alpha channel for transparency. JPG can't store transparency and fills it with white or black. For marketplaces such as Amazon that require a pure white background, flatten onto #FFFFFF and export as JPG at quality 85–90.
Batch large catalogs locally
For 50 or more images, run rembg p ./raw ./cutouts with the BiRefNet model. Spot-check 1 in 10 results and fix only the failures by hand. This avoids the per-image fees that add up quickly on paid services.

Is a free background remover really free, with no hidden costs?
Windows Paint, Apple Photos/Preview, Adobe Express and rembg are free at full resolution. The usual catch is remove.bg, where only the low-resolution preview (0.25 MP) is free and HD downloads cost credits (about 0.10–0.20 USD per image). Photoroom's free exports carry a watermark.
Which free background remover is the most private?
The tools that run on your device: Windows Paint, Apple Photos/Preview and rembg. Your image never leaves your computer. Use them for ID photos, client work or anything confidential. Cloud tools upload your image to their servers, and some keep it for a period stated in their privacy policy.
Why does my transparent background turn white or black?
Because the file was saved as JPG, or the app or platform displaying it doesn't support transparency. Export as PNG or WebP with alpha. Some platforms, including several marketplaces and messaging apps, flatten transparency on upload anyway.
Can AI background removers handle hair and glass?
Hair is handled well by Adobe Express, remove.bg and rembg with the BiRefNet model. Transparent and reflective objects (glass, bottles, veils) remain hard for every tool. For those, shoot on a plain backdrop and retouch by hand with a layer mask.
