03 — Guide
How to make a free YouTube banner step by step
Start from a 2560×1440 canvas
YouTube rejects images smaller than 2048×1152 px. Upload at 2560×1440 so the banner stays sharp on TVs.
Keep the essentials in the safe area
On phones, YouTube shows only the central 1546×423 px. Put the channel name, tagline and upload schedule there. Use the outer area for background only, because it is visible on TVs and partly on desktop.
Write a one-line value proposition
Tell viewers what they get and how often, for example 'Budget PC builds every Thursday'. Text should be at least 60–80 px tall so it is readable on phones.
Export below 6 MB
Export JPG at about 85–90% quality, or PNG if the banner is mostly flat colors with text. Most banners are 0.5–2 MB.
Upload and check on every device
In YouTube Studio, go to Customization → Branding → Banner image → Upload and use the device preview. Then check your channel on a phone and a desktop browser.
04 — FAQ
Common questions
What size is a YouTube banner?
Upload 2560×1440 px (minimum 2048×1152, maximum 6 MB). The safe area visible on all devices is 1546×423 px in the center. On desktop, the visible band is about 2560×423 px.
Why is my YouTube banner cropped?
YouTube shows different parts of the image on TVs, desktops and phones. Anything outside the central 1546×423 px area can be cropped on mobile, so move text and logos inside it.
Can I make a YouTube banner free without a watermark?
Yes. Canva, Adobe Express and Photopea export banners without watermarks when you use free assets. Snappa is also watermark-free but limits free accounts to 3 downloads per month.
What are the best alternatives if I need advanced features?
Canva Pro (about $15/month) adds Magic Resize to turn one banner into Twitch, X and LinkedIn headers. Photoshop or Affinity Photo give full control. Custom designers on Fiverr typically charge $20–150 for a complete channel art set.
