03 — Guide

How to calculate eBay fees and profit step by step

  1. Find your category's final value fee

Most categories charge about 13.6% on the first $7,500. Exceptions include some books, music and movies (around 15%), guitars and basses (lower), and sneakers or handbags over certain prices. Check eBay's selling fees page for your category.

  2. Include shipping and sales tax in the base

eBay charges the final value fee on the total amount the buyer pays, including shipping and the sales tax that eBay collects. Leaving tax out understates fees by about 0.5–1% of the sale price.

  3. Add the per-order fee and ad rate

Add $0.40 per order ($0.30 if the total is $10 or less). If you use Promoted Listings General, the ad rate (for example 5%) is charged when a sale comes through the ad.

  4. Subtract item cost and your shipping cost

Profit = item price + shipping charged − eBay fees − item cost − label cost. Price so that the margin stays positive after a typical return rate.

  5. Adjust for your seller level

Top Rated Plus listings get a 10% discount on the final value fee. Below Standard sellers pay a surcharge. Store subscriptions lower the rate in many categories.

04 — FAQ

Common questions

How much does eBay take from a sale?

For most US categories, about 13.6% of the total sale (item + shipping + tax) plus $0.40 per order, before any ad fees. On a $100 item with free shipping and 7% tax, that is about 107 × 0.136 + 0.40 = $14.95.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. The final value fee applies to the shipping you charge as well as the item price. Offering 'free shipping' with the cost built into the price results in about the same total fee.

Are there insertion fees on eBay?

Private sellers and sellers without a store get a monthly allowance of free listings (250 on most accounts). After that, insertion fees are about $0.35 per listing. Store subscriptions include more free listings.

Is this eBay fee calculator accurate?

It uses eBay's standard US formula with rates you can edit. Fees still vary with category, seller performance and international sales (an extra fee applies to buyers outside the US), so confirm the exact rate in Seller Hub.
