Stacked discounts multiply: 25% off plus an extra 10% off equals 32.5% off, not 35%. Tax is applied after the discounts.

Short answer

To calculate a discount, multiply the price by (1 − discount %). An $80 item at 25% off costs $60, and you save $20. Stacked discounts multiply rather than add: 25% off plus an extra 10% off is 32.5% off. Enter a price above to see the total with tax.

03 — Guide

How to calculate a discount step by step

  1. Convert the percentage to a decimal

25% off means you pay 75%, so multiply by 0.75. For 30% off, multiply by 0.70.

  2. Multiply the original price

    $80 × 0.75 = $60. You save $80 − $60 = $20.

  3. Apply stacked discounts one after another

    An extra 10% off applies to the already reduced price: $60 × 0.90 = $54. The total discount is 1 − (0.75 × 0.90) = 32.5%, not 35%.

  4. Add sales tax last

In most US states, tax applies to the discounted price: $54 × 1.0725 = $57.92 at a 7.25% rate. Coupons from manufacturers can be taxed differently, depending on the state.

04 — FAQ

Common questions

How do I calculate 20% off a price?

Multiply the price by 0.8. For example, 20% off $45 is 45 × 0.8 = $36, and you save $9. A quick way to do it in your head: 10% is the price with the decimal point moved one place left ($4.50), so double it for 20% ($9).

Are two discounts added together?

No. Discounts compound: 50% off plus an extra 20% off is 60% off in total (0.5 × 0.8 = 0.4 left to pay), not 70%. Retailers use stacked offers because they sound bigger than they are.

How do I find the original price from the sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount). If an item costs $63 after 30% off, the original price was 63 ÷ 0.7 = $90.

Is this discount calculator free?

Yes. It is free, has no ads and needs no sign-up. All calculations run in your browser.
