How to calculate Shopify fees step by step
Pick the plan and billing period
Monthly billing: Basic $39, Grow $105, Advanced $399 (US). Paying yearly cuts these by roughly 25%. Plus starts at around $2,300 per month on a longer contract.

With Shopify Payments in the US, online cards cost about 2.9% + $0.30 on Basic, 2.7% + $0.30 on Grow and 2.5% + $0.30 on Advanced. International and American Express cards can cost more.
Add the third-party gateway fee if it applies
If you process through PayPal, Stripe or another gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify adds 2% (Basic), 1% (Grow) or 0.6% (Advanced) on top of the gateway's own fee. Note that PayPal Express Checkout alongside Shopify Payments doesn't trigger this fee.
Compare the effective rate across plans
An upgrade pays for itself when the rate savings exceed the price difference. Going from Basic to Grow saves 0.2% of revenue, which covers the $66 price difference at about $33,000 in monthly sales.

Common questions
How much does Shopify charge per sale?
With Shopify Payments on Basic in the US, about 2.9% + $0.30 per online card order. On a $60 order that is $2.04. Grow and Advanced lower the percentage. Shopify's own rate is the only processing fee: there's no separate gateway fee when you use Shopify Payments.
When should I upgrade from Basic to Grow?
Once monthly online sales exceed about $33,000, the 0.2% lower card rate covers the $66 price difference. Grow also adds more staff accounts and reports, which may justify upgrading earlier.
Does Shopify charge transaction fees?
Not with Shopify Payments. If you use a third-party payment provider instead, Shopify charges an extra 2%, 1% or 0.6% per order, depending on your plan, on top of that provider's fees.
